“Thank you for a lovely afternoon. I have had a wonderful time, but I fear the walk to the loch has quite tired me out. I need a rest before the evening meal,” Ellen told Isla, Malcolm, and Alexander as they stood in the hall, having just returned from their jaunt outside.
“O’ course, lass. T’was a fine day indeed,” Malcolm said, beaming at her with his seemingly open, honest face. “Why don’t ye let Isla escort ye back to yer chambers? I’ve somethin’ I need to discuss with Alex before we part ways.”
Isla nodded and walked forward, taking Ellen’s arm in hers and leading her away from Malcolm and Alexander. She turned back again to catch his eye, not winking this time. Just looking. Watching.
“Remember what I said, m’lady,” Isla whispered, and Ellen looked over to find her friend staring at her.
“What?” she asked, slowing down to admire one of the tapestries on the wall they were passing. It showed a goddess surrounded by a circular hedge, animals jumping over the greenery to try and nip at the long ends of her golden hair. It was a peculiar picture, but Ellen found it arresting.
“What I said earlier, in the library. Ye must be careful. Ye cannae forsake Lachlan. Ye must be faithful. Ye must be…”
Ellen interrupted her, turning to unlace her arm from Isla’s so she could look at her friend head-on. “What are you implying, Isla?” There was a bite to her tone that did a poor job of covering up her fear. What had Isla seen? What did this wise, astute friend of hers know?
Isla did not reveal herself. She only whispered, “I am tellin’ ye to be careful. To think o’ whatever it is ye are doing. Like as no’, ye’ll be lady o’ this castle soon enough, an’ all eyes are already upon ye. What ye do, what ye say—tis seen by all, m’lady. Remember that, aye?”
Ellen swallowed before responding. “I know what I am doing.”
Isla nodded, took Ellen’s arm, and then they continued on their way to her chambers. Even after left, Isla’s words rung in Ellen’s ears. But despite her friend’s warning, she could not stop what had already begun. She was powerless to do so.
